In the midst of the social occurrences that have flooded our media and the uprising that is very necessary for our justice system, I would like to bring to your attention what happened to me.
I was arrested for a drug related crime (2012). I stood in front of a judge (in Guilford County) with attorney Wayne Harris, who did not have my best interest at heart; subsequently resulting in his termination. I told the judge that I felt this way, and he had no remorse. This judge forced me to represent myself in court (trial) without an attorney. Each person in this country has the Constitutional right to an attorney and effective assistance of counsel. I was denied both of these rights. I was sentenced to 144-185 months, to follow the current active sentence (127-162 months) that I was already serving on an unrelated charge. Both of these sentences were for drug charges (non-violent). I am currently incarcerated in Nash Corr. Inst. At the trial, when I was forced to represent myself, I was not college educated and I did not understand the legal system. I continuously stated to the judge that “I don’t know what this means, I don’t have a lawyer.” The judge didn’t care. Furthermore, The N.C. judicial branches of government believe that it was right that I was forced to go to trial without an attorney.
I am now 44 years old, and have been incarcerated for about 10 years. While in prison, I have completely changed my life. I have received a multitude of accomplishments. See the tab on the home page entitled: Accomplishments and Plans. I am currently enrolled as a full time student in the College at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (3.9. GPA). I make a conscious decision every day to share the Word of God with my fellow neighbors. Furthermore, I have become a leader to the men at Nash Corr. Facility and continue to better myself daily.
Partly, for the reasons stated above, me and my family seek relief in this case.
There needs to be a change in this case and that change begins now.
Please share my name (Dwayne Haizlip # 0161397) and story with anybody in governmental power, media outlets, and advocacy groups.
